So now I've got 27 cameras...all wanting a roll of film. Question is, which film?
As a rule, I've generally fed point and shoot cameras iso 400 film. My reasoning is that questionable AF systems are best helped by maxing depth of field. Also, since most point and shoots will sport a wide'ish and slow'ish lens, it's not like I'm going to do any fancy narrow DOF work anyway. Another consideration...higher speed film helps keep that flash turned off. I don't much care for flash and some of these cameras are so auto-everything that you can't even manually turn it off (yuk).
Ok, 400 iso it is...now, color or black and white. My first preference is always black and white, but there are certainly some downsides. Shooting black and white means processing it myself, ok, that's actually good and bad. Good is, it's cheap. Bad is, that's a lot of film and time! How about cost? Well, it's pretty close really. Drug store 400 iso color can be had for $2/roll plus $1 for developing. I can get tri-x for about $3/roll, so that's really a wash. Hmmm... I think I'll go with the drug store color. Why? Well, I'm likely to hand a bunch of these cameras to some boy scouts to shoot with. I don't much relish the idea of developing all that film when most of it will be random crap. Heck, I might even splurge on an additional $1/roll to let the drug store make crappy scans and save myself that time (not inconsiderable).
400 iso, color, drug store film. Sounds like a plan.
I may make a couple of exceptions for the better cameras I want to shoot myself. I've got this slightly perverse desire to shoot 50 iso through an Olympus XA2. I wonder if I'll get any keepers zone focusing narrow dof?
